US Customs Procedures?

I ordered an electric cigarette from the UK to be shipped to the US. Its stuck in customs right now, but what I would like to know is, when the check packages, do they open them and go through them? I ordered nicotine liquid as well and i'd hate to think they are testing and going through my order. Does anybody know their procedure?
